The billion-dollar opportunity sailing into Miami

The billion-dollar opportunity sailing into Miami

Cruise lines have bounced back since the pandemic, announcing record profits, passenger numbers and investment. Much of this investment flows to Miami via PortMiami, the busiest cruise terminal in the world. Just in February, the port held a record number of 13 ships in one day, bringing tens of thousands of tourists and crew to Miami, providing a significant boost to the economy of the area.

A rising tide lifts all ships, and many small businesses rely on the tourism industry to survive. Take a look below at some of the most recent cruise industry investments, how this will affect Miami SMBs, and what you can do to benefit from this.

Record funding pouring into PortMiami

Given PortMiami’s status as the world’s busiest cruise terminal, many cruise companies base their operations in Miami, and have dedicated terminals for their ships. One such cruise line is Royal Caribbean, who have begun a $453 million investment in a new cruise terminal. This money is going directly back into the local economy, providing dozens of jobs and allowing RCL to dock more ships. The port now expects it can house 12 cruise ships at one day, which could allow for more than 25,000 guests and 10,000 crew members to be visiting Miami and the surrounding areas.

The investment is not stopping there. MSC Cruises has also opened the world's largest cruise terminal at PortMiami, designed to process tens of thousands of passengers each day. Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings continues to invest in its Miami headquarters and port facilities, while Carnival Cruise Line remains one of the port's biggest operators. With more ships sailing from Miami than ever before, the city is set to welcome millions of passengers every year.

For local businesses, this represents a steady stream of potential customers. Every cruise departure and arrival creates demand for transport, accommodation, restaurants, retail stores, entertainment venues, and professional services. Even businesses that are not directly linked to tourism often benefit as spending circulates throughout the local economy.

More visitors means more opportunities

Cruise passengers rarely spend their entire trip on board. Many arrive in Miami a day or two before departure or stay after returning home, giving them time to explore everything the city has to offer.

Hotels, cafés, bars and restaurants are among the biggest beneficiaries, but the opportunities extend much further. Local tour operators, souvenir shops, beauty salons, gyms, laundrettes and convenience stores all see increased footfall during busy sailing periods. Businesses offering airport transfers, luggage storage or travel essentials can also benefit from the constant flow of visitors.

Crew members are another valuable customer base. With thousands passing through PortMiami every week, they regularly spend money on dining, shopping, mobile phone services and leisure activities while ashore.

How SMBs can make the most of the cruise boom

The growing cruise industry creates opportunities, but businesses still need to make themselves visible. Making it easy for visitors to find you online is one of the simplest ways to capture new customers. Keeping your Google Business Profile updated, collecting positive reviews and maintaining active social media accounts can all help attract tourists searching for recommendations.

Partnerships can also be valuable. Hotels, travel agencies, tour operators and transport companies often recommend local businesses to visitors. Building relationships with these businesses can create a consistent source of referrals throughout the year.

Finally, think about the needs of cruise passengers. Many are short on time and looking for convenience. Clear pricing, fast service and flexible payment options can make a real difference when customers only have a few hours to explore the city.
